  • Do these courses integrate a Biblical Christian worldview?

    Yes, all of Apologia’s courses are written from a Biblical worldview. In language arts, literary works are examined from a Biblical Christian worldview, helping students understand how these works affirm and illuminate Biblical truth.

  • What types of literature are included the American Literature book?

    The course covers a diverse range of American literary works, including historical accounts, political statements, letters, sermons, autobiographies, short stories, novels, poems, and plays. Students will study writings from various periods, such as the Colonial Period, the Age of Reason, the Romantic Age, the Age of Realism, and the Modern Age.

  • Is there a recommended grade level for American Literature?

    American Literature is for use by students in grades 11 and 12. This course can also be used by those in grades 9 and 10, but this is only recommended if the students are extremely good readers.

  • What is included in a Self-Paced Literature Unit Study?

    In each of the four Apologia Self-Paced Literature Unit Studies, students will read a character-building novel by Lamplighter Ministries. These books aim to strengthen students’ relationship with Christ as they study the Christian themes woven throughout the book and apply those truths to their lives. Students will also learn to think critically about story elements, such as characters, plots, and themes.

    Each individual literature Unit Study is one part of a four-part literature course and will provide all the learning tools needed for students to understand and master the rich concepts of the novel.

    What’s Included?

    Each online Self-Paced Unit Study includes the following:

    • Novel – Students receive access to a digital version of the novel.
    • Audiobook – An audio narration of the novel enhances online reading and is beneficial for auditory learners or students with reading difficulty.
    • Video Lessons – Instructor Cecelia Schmidt provides video lessons to strengthen students’ understanding of the course concepts.
    • On Your Own Questions – Independent review questions and answers are included to allow students to practice the concepts taught and prepare for tests.
    • Automatically Graded Tests – Students will take tests that are automatically graded throughout this unit study.
    • Essay Topics (Optional) – Do you want your student to take their unit study a step further? This study includes optional, pre-written essay topics for your students to really dig deep into the novel’s meaning and its application to their lives.

    NOTE: You will not receive any physical copies of the novel, Audiobook, or Video Lessons. These items are incorporated into the online, self-paced portal.

    The Basket of Flowers

    The Basket of Flowers is the first book of the Lamplighter Rare Collector’s Series by Christoph von Schmid.

    James, the king’s gardener, teaches his 15-year-old daughter Mary all the principles of godliness through his flowers. She is falsely accused of stealing, and the penalty is death. Mary remembers her father had taught her: that it is better to die for the truth than to live for a lie. Major themes of this novel include honesty, purity, and courage.

    The Giant Killer

    The Giant Killer, by Charlotte Maria Tucker, is a part of the Lamplighter Rare Collector’s Series.

    When ten-year-old twins, Adolphus and Constantine are sent away to live with the family of their private tutor, they must adapt to life where fun seems to be in short supply. Major themes of this novel include fighting against temptation and conquering your giants.

    The Light in the Robbers Cave

    The Light in the Robbers Cave, by Charlotte Maria Tucker, is a part of the Lamplighter Rare Collector’s Series.

    Horace is a rebellious young man who cares only for himself. However, things change quickly for Horace as he is taken against his will into the robbers’ cave. God brings some interesting people into his life, who help him discover light in the darkness. Major themes of this novel include evangelism and shining as lights in the darkness.

    A Peep Behind the Scenes

    A Peep Behind the Scenes, by Mrs. O.F. Walton, is a part of the Lamplighter Rare Collector’s Series.

    As an actress, Rosalie’s life seems perfect from the outside looking in. However, she is lost and in need of saving, especially when the only one she loves is taken from her. It is through her pain that she comes to realize the Good Shepherd has been seeking her and loving her all along. The love of the Good Shepherd is the major theme of this novel.
